Deutsche Telekom · i14y Lab

The i14y Lab is an innovation project by Deutsche Telekom AG, dedicated to certifying hardware and software components in the mobile network sector. With the O-RAN concept, flexible and interoperable mobile networks are made possible through open standards.
Since early 2024, I have been supporting the team as a designer in interaction design, user experience, and corporate design.

Designing Digital Interfaces – Approach

One of my key areas in this project is the development of an internal dashboard and booking tool, in collaboration with other UX designers and developers. The goal is to provide companies with an easy, automated certification process via a digital interface.

Through ideation and process workshops with future users and development teams, we identify key requirements that shape the product’s concept. By creating user journeys and personas, we analyze user needs and behaviors. Additionally, ecosystem player maps visualize dependencies and relationships within the telecom sector, helping define the i14y Lab’s positioning.

From Sketch to UI Prototype

Once wireframes are created, I translate these ideas into interactive prototypes within the newly developed interface environment. To maintain consistency, I utilize a small design system that I developed. These prototypes illustrate various user scenarios and potential feature enhancements.

Close collaboration with software developers ensures seamless integration across different levels. The outcome is a continuous improvement of i14y Lab’s internal tools, making certification processes more efficient while enhancing the user experience.

Outdoorscreen – Large-Scale Lab Tour

The i14y Lab’s refined design language extends to other digital touchpoints. In the entrance area, visitors can explore the lab’s activities through an interactive large-format touchscreen that presents key information in an engaging way.

With an intuitive user interface and large buttons, visitors can navigate through the lab’s ecosystem in an interactive experience.

Branding & visual Communication

The branding of i14y Lab creates a clear and modern visual identity that conveys innovation and professionalism. My goal is to further develop the cohesive visual style that is reflected across all media – from digital platforms to print materials – and to make the brand consistently tangible.

The design of badges and certificates serves as a visible mark of successful certifications. They are created with a functional and modern aesthetic to convey trust and quality. These elements are used in both printed and digital formats for official events and external communication.

Visualizing whitepapers plays a crucial role in communicating complex topics. Clear graphic elements enhance readability and make the content both visually appealing and accessible to a highly technical audience.

White Paper visuals

For events like Plugfest, Summit, or MWC, unique visual concepts are regularly developed, including key visuals, digital banners, and exhibition displays. These typography-driven compositions enhance brand presence and create a visually engaging experience for participants and partners.

And the journey continues…

Working with the i14y Lab is an exciting, ongoing experience. The path to an open mobile network market is still long, but institutions like the Lab make it an achievable goal. I look forward to the challenges ahead and the solutions we will create together.

A big thank you to the team!
